Following the U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, it was reported by President Trump that the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, had been killed in an airstrike on his compound. This is a huge blow to the Iranian regime, which has reportedly lost much of its leadership. It remains unclear who will succeed Khamenei, as there appears to be a leadership vacuum in Iran. Nonetheless, Khamenei’s death is excellent news for the world and for all those who aspire to peace, democracy, and security.
Khamenei first came to prominence during the 1978-1979 Iranian Revolution, where he marched in opposition to Iran’s shah, Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. Following the establishment of the Islamic Republic, Khamenei then served as the third president of Iran from 1981 to 1989, during which he oversaw the Iran-Iraq War and developed close ties with the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. After Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini’s death in 1989, Khamenei was elected Supreme Leader, becoming the most powerful man in the country
The Khamenei dictatorship has seen Iran become one of the most firmly anti-American powers in the region and one of the biggest sponsors of terror in the world. Khamenei backed the so-called “axis of resistance” – an anti-Western and anti-Israel coalition of groups that included terrorist groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza, and the Houthis in Yemen. Also part of this coalition was the murderous Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, which carried out blatant crimes against humanity against its own population, including the use of chemical weapons. Additionally, Khamenei was involved in proxy wars with Saudi Arabia and Israel, and supported the brutal Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Domestically, Khamenei was a brutal autocrat who repressed protests and crushed dissent. Thousands of protesters were killed, tortured, abused, and disappeared in the many protests that occurred under Khamenei’s regime over the decades. Many people, including journalists and bloggers, were given unreasonable prison sentences or executed on the smallest of charges. It is clear that the Iranian people long suffered under the Khamenei regime.
Ayatollah Khamenei’s death represents an opportunity for the people of Iran to finally rise up and reclaim their own destiny. While the future looks uncertain and the current structure of the Iranian government remains intact, Khamenei’s death ought to be the first step towards the Iranian people finally being able to choose their own government and to finally experience the freedom that they have been missing for so long.
