In Minneapolis, Minnesota, on the morning of January 24, 2026, United States Border Patrol agents shot and killed a 37-year-old American citizen named Alex Pretti, an ICU nurse who worked at the local Veterans Affairs hospital. He had been protesting recent ICE operations in the Twin Cities area and had been unarmed prior to the shooting. Despite his licensed firearm being taken away from him beforehand, Pretti was killed anyway. This incident comes a few weeks after the killing of Renee Good, a 37-year-old American citizen, in the same city.
These American citizens were merely practicing their constitutional and God-given rights to protest their government, and they were killed for doing so. This represents a failure of the federal government’s immigration operations in Minneapolis. The Trump administration’s insistence on escalating the operations in Minnesota has only led to senseless violence and the murder of Americans. The militaristic actions being undertaken in Minnesota reflect poorly on America’s public image. The whole situation is doing great damage to the unity of the country and will only do worse damage to the administration’s approval ratings, which have already been tarnished enough.
The President of the United States ought to pause the operations, de-escalate, and shift the focus of the federal government to deport truly criminal illegal immigrants. The agents who committed this latest act of violence should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Too much effort has been poured into arresting people whose only crime was staying too long. Illegal immigration continues to be an issue, but it is not worth killing Americans to deal with the problem. It is high time for Congress and the courts to hold the administration accountable in this regard.
